Order of Operations
When evaluating algebraic expressions, we must follow a certain order of operations to obtain the right answer.
“PEMDAS”. (Acronym) It stands for “Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, and Addition and Subtraction”
Example:
10 – 3 x (5-3)² + 8 ÷ 2
Do things in parentheses first
=10 – 3 x (2)² + 8 ÷ 2
Solve all the exponents
=10 – 3 x 4 + 8 ÷ 2
Multiplication and division are next
(from left to right)
=10 – 12 + 4
Then addition and subtraction, from left to right
= – 2 + 4
= 2
