A polygon is a closed figure formed by a finite number of line segments.
A quadrilateral is a polygon that has four sides, four vertices, and four angles.
A parallelogram is a quadrilateral in which both pairs of opposite sides are parallel.
A rectangle has all the properties of a parallelogram.
- Opposite sides are parallel.
- Opposite sides are congruent (equal).
- Opposite angles are congruent (equal).
- Consecutive angles are supplementary (two angles that make up 180º).
- Diagonals bisect each other.
Squares and Rectangles
A rectangle is a quadrilateral with four right angles. Rectangle means “right angle“. In a rectangle, opposite sides are the same length (congruent).
Properties:
- All angles are a right angle (congruent).
- Each pair of adjacent sides is perpendicular (at an angle of 90°)
- Opposite sides are congruent (the same length).
- Opposite sides are parallel.
- The diagonals are congruent (the same length).
- Diagonals bisect each other
Square
A square is a regular quadrilateral (four equal sides and four equal angles [90º]). The square is a rectangle whose length and width are equal.
The area is the total surface of a shape (the number of square units needed to cover the surface).
To find the area of a square, multiply the length of one side by itself (squaring the side length).
Area of a square = (side × side) square units
The perimeter of a two-dimensional shape is the sum of the length of its sides.
The perimeter of a square = 4 × length of a side.

Rectangle
A rectangle is a plane figure with four sides and four right angles.
The area is the total surface of the shape (the number of square units needed to cover its surface).
The area if the rectangle is equal to its length multiplied by its width (A = L ˣ W),
The perimeter of a rectangle is the total distance around the outside of the rectangle
Perimeter of a rectangle = 2(length + width) units
P=2(L+W)
