Objective:
The student will be able to solve problems involving scale factors in real world situations.
Standards:
6.5(A) represent mathematical and real‐world problems involving ratios and rates using scale factors, tables, graphs, and proportions
Review:
6th Grade Unpacked Math TEKS.docx page 29
Planning:
The student will understand that a ratio is a multiplicative comparison of two or more quantities. When two quantities are related proportionally, the ratio of one quantity to the other is invariant as the numerical values of both quantities change by the same factor.
Performance Indicators:
- Students will be able to find the missing term in a proportion.
- Students will be able to use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems
- Students will be able to solve real-world problems using unit rates.
- Given a unit of measurement, students will be able to convert it to other units of measurement and will be able to use it to solve contextual problems.
Success Criteria:
I can understand and use ratios and proportions in mathematical applications of daily life.
I can use proportions and unit rates to change units.

This activity will be projected on the online whiteboard and done as a whole class. Please volunteer to find the answer yourself and report back to the class.
Due to the pandemic, the number of visitors to this blog has grown a lot and last year we reached more than one million visits from students and teachers from around the world.
In this blog, I’ve posted numerous videos that show how to solve math problems. To make the videos available to a greater number of students I am starting to publish them on my YouTube Channel, and I am removing all restrictions so that they can be shared for free with all of you.

How do I represent and/or solve real-world and mathematical problems using rates, ratios, and/or percents?
|
Discount, Tax, Percent of change, Proportional rates, cross-products, proportions, equivalent ratios, solving a proportion
|
Differentiation
I will use the KWL approach (What do I Know, What do I want to know, What did I learn) to determine student readiness, interests and preferences. I will provide extra time, differentiate instruction to support ELL, supplemental aids and reteach if necessary.

Problem Solving Format
Essential Questions:
- What is a ratio and how can we know if two ratios are proportional?
- How are rates and unit rates used in the real world?
- How is a unit rate similar to and different from a ratio?
- How do you use ratios and proportions to make comparisons?
- How can proportional reasoning help me find unknowns in everyday life?
Journal
- Write in your journal about ratios, rates and proportions.
- Write in your journal about how you use ratios, rates and proportions to make comparisons?
- Create and solve your own problem by applying proportions in real life situation.
Frayer template
We will use the Frayer Model to identify and understand unfamiliar vocabulary.
Closing Product:
- I will be able to apply the ratios and rates concepts in real life word problems.
- I will be able to read and write ratios, solve ratios and rates word problems, and find missing values in the tables.
- I will be able use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane.
